NMA Rivers Advocacy visit to the Rivers State Commissioner of HealthAdmin
The NMA Rivers State Executive Committee paid a courtesy call to the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Prof. Princewill Chike. In attendance, were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ndidi Chikanele Utchay and Directors in the ministry.
The Chairman of the association, Prof. Chizindu Alikor congratulated the Rivers State Government and the State Ministry of Health for its proactive fight against COVID 19 in the state.
He also commended the state government on the inauguration of a committee to oversee the revitalization of the Prof. Kelsey Harrison Hospital and the Dental/Maxillofacial Hospital. He however suggested that in future, it will ideal for NMA to be represented in the composition of such a committee, citing a need for the NMA to be carried along in all matters concerning Health in the state.
The chairman, Prof. Chizindu Alikor further highlighted pressing needs of doctors in Rivers State such as; the need for the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act, need to employ more manpower into the health sector, need for proper placement/skipping of doctors in Rivers state service, need for payment of grants to Resident doctors, need to address promotion of doctors in the state health service, provision of group life insurance and employee compensation for health workers in the State. Other requests made were: payment of COVID 19 inducement allowance, upward review of hazard allowance to 50% of consolidated basic salary for health workers and the implementation of state contributory health care scheme with inclusion of private medical facilities as recognised providers. A request was also made for partnership with the State Government to carry out free medical/surgical outreaches to various LGAs in the state. Other issues highlighted included the need for regularization of intake of house officers into the state teaching Hospital and the need to forestall the perennial problem of delayed payment of house officers salaries.
Responding, the Hon. Commissioner assured the NMA that the state government shall address the demands of the association. Being a bonafide member of the association, he pledged to ensure that the interest of the NMA is placed at the frontburner.
